A Decision to Leave Seminary Formation

A Decision to Leave Seminary Formation Journey of Discernment Seeking Clarity in Vocation Leaving seminary formation was a significant and emotionally charged decision, one that required deep introspection and personal growth. As I look back on this pivotal moment in my life , I find solace in the clarity I gained through the process of discernment. The decision to leave the seminary was not one of failure or retreat but rather a courageous step toward aligning my life with my authentic self. It was in stepping away that I truly discovered who I am and what my passions and aspirations are. Recognizing a New Path While I initially entered the seminary with a sense of purpose, I soon realized that my path lay elsewhere, in different forms of service and personal expression. This realization was not easy, but it was essential for my growth and self-awareness, as the Gospel reminds us of the call to follow Christ and discern where we are most called to serve: As Jesus said, ...

The Purpose and Importance of Seminary Training

The Purpose and Importance of Seminary Training

Seminary training holds a profound purpose and plays a crucial role in shaping individuals who are called to religious or priestly vocation. As I reflect on the significance of seminary training, I am filled with gratitude for the transformative experiences and invaluable lessons it offers to my life.

Seminary training serves as a sacred space where individuals are nurtured, challenged, and equipped to fulfill their calling. It is a time of deep exploration, intellectual growth, spiritual formation, and personal development. Through academic studies, theological reflections, and communal living, seminary training prepares individuals to become compassionate servant-leaders, dedicated servants, and knowledgeable guides in their respective faith communities. As Pope Francis reminded the seminary rectors from Latin America who were in Rome last November 10, 2022, that the mission of a seminary “is not to form ‘supermen’ who pretend to know and control everything” but to help seminarians become humble servants of the communities.

Theological Knowledge as a Strong Foundation

One of the primary purposes of seminary training is to cultivate a strong foundation in theological knowledge. It provides an opportunity to delve into sacred texts, understand the historical and cultural contexts of religious traditions, and engage in critical thinking about matters of faith. This academic rigor deepens my understanding of theology, doctrine, and spiritual practices, enabling me to navigate complex theological issues and provide guidance to others.

Spiritual Formation and Personal Faith

However, the importance of seminary training extends beyond my intellectual growth. It is also a time of spiritual formation, where I am encouraged to develop a personal relationship with God and explore the depths of my own faith. Through prayer, meditation, and engagement with spiritual practices, I learn to nurture my own spirituality and cultivate a life of devotion, which in turn enables me to guide others on their own spiritual journeys.

Personal and Character Development

Seminary training is equally significant in fostering personal and character development. It challenges me to confront my strengths, weaknesses, and biases, and encourages me to cultivate virtues such as humility, compassion, integrity, and resilience. The supportive community of fellow seminarians and faculty provides an environment where I can grow in self-awareness, embrace diversity, and learn to engage in meaningful dialogue with others.

Formation of Relationships and Community

The importance of seminary training also lies in the formation of relationships. Through shared experiences, deep conversations, and collaborative learning, lifelong friendships and partnerships are formed with my seminary brothers. These relationships provide a network of support, accountability, and encouragement that extends beyond the seminary years and strengthens our respective journey in life.

In conclusion, as I reflect on my own seminary training for seven years, I am humbled by the transformative power it has had on my life. It has shaped my understanding of faith, deepened my spiritual connection, expanded my knowledge of theology, and cultivated a profound sense of purpose and mission. Seminary training has instilled in me a passion for serving others, a commitment to justice and compassion, and a lifelong dedication to the values that underpin my present vocation in life.

What is Theology All About?

What is Theology All About?  (by :  Raul J. Bonoan, S.J)           If theology is to have – and it certainly has – a rightful place in any academic curriculum and the life of a Catholic university, it cannot afford to be merely a haphazard presentation of the truths of the faith or a series of free-wheeling discussions on the relevance of Christianity today. Like chemistry, history, psychology, or any other subject, theology must be properly a study and as such, ought to be characterized by some method or order. I hesitate to call it a “science” or “discipline” inasmuch as these words often evoke the unhappy image of an esoteric body of truths cultivated by thinkers safely locked up in their ivory towers. But if science is to be understood – as it is generally understood today – as a methodic study of our inquiry into a significant question or phenomenon (something that falls within the range of human experience), then there is no justifiable r...

The Filipino Catholic Faith

The Filipino Catholic Faith   (Excerpted from The Catechism for Filipino Catholics, nos. 28-54) Opening The "Good News" of Jesus Christ The “Good News” is that God has become man in Jesus Christ our Lord, who came to save us from sin and bring us to fullness of life. This is the Gospel which we Filipinos have accepted. As PCP II proudly declares: “For us Filipinos, the first century of the coming millennium will mark the 500th year since we as a people accepted the Faith” (PCP II 3). It makes us the only Christian nation among our Asian brethren.  Christ's Message and Filipino Culture There are deep affinities between Christ’s message and the Filipino’s inmost ways of thinking and acting. “Much of the Gospel has become part of us - compassion, forgiveness, caring, piety - and makes of us a basically decent people (PCP II 15). Through the past centuries, right up to our present critical times, growing more mature in the following of Christ has meant becoming more truly a...
